What is HIFU?

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new treatment for skin tightening that some consider a non-invasive and painless replacement for face lifts. It uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin. As an example HIFU is commonly used to tighten/define loose skin on the jawline.

How does it work?

The high intensity ultrasound penetrates the layer of your skin, bypassing the surface of the skin and delivering targeted energy specifically into the deep, structural tissues and muscles where collagen lives. Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature, they experience cellular structural changes. This promotes an increase in collagen, which will result in tighter and firmer skin with fewer wrinkles.

How is HIFU administered?

A gel is applied to the area that will be treated and the ultrasonic device is passed over the skin. A single area can be treated which roughly takes around 20 to 30 minutes, a full face and neck treatment takes around 60 minutes.

Here’s what to expect at your appointment:

  • Your skin is firstly cleansed on the targeted area

  • The possibility of applying topical aesthetic cream before starting

  • Then ultrasound gel is applied

  • The HIFU device is placed against the skin

  • Ultrasound energy is then delivered to the target area in short pulses

You may experience slight redness for up to an hour following the treatment, and it has been reported that in some cases there can be minor swelling, tingling or tenderness. These symptoms are mild and temporary.

  • Who is a good candidate for HIFU?

A good candidate for HIFU is someone with skin that is currently slightly loose. Typically, a lowered eyebrow line and sagging on the eyelids are the first signs of maturing skin. Typically, those in their thirties and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are good candidates for HIFU.

  • How long do results from HIFU last?

Following the HIFU treatment, clients can see results last up to a year. This can continue for another, depending on the condition of the skin. Future touch up appointments are recommended to keep pace with the ageing process however, this varies by individual customers.
